Children's Eyewear for the Back-to-School Season
Dominic and I are both fond of fitting glasses for youngsters. It is an especially unique responsibility and joy they embrace, as rambunctious youth often have a particular idea that they are invincible. I know it firsthand, remembering my time as a heedless bundle of energy and carelessness that always went at play full speed in daredevil fashion—climbing trees, riding bikes, and collecting hundreds of little injuries along the way. Lucky for me, my mother was an ER nurse, resigned, and prepared to fix the damage.
Durable Children's Eyewear Solutions
Therefore, fitting eyewear to children must first concentrate on the lenses being as clear and impact-proof as possible. We see many prescriptions recommending polycarbonate lenses for safety—a good option for years. Today, polycarbonate has a reputation for chromatic aberration that sometimes alters true color and clarity, and can crack when drilled for certain frames. At CustomEyes, we provide our clients, young and old, with lenses made from a material called Trivex. It's harder, more ballistic, and provides sharper vision and more perfect color distinction than polycarbonate.

Eyewear Young Clients Cherish
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Dominic and I remember our own childhoods, and reactions to the news that we needed glasses—and the awful thought that first came to mind. So often, glasses are prescribed to sensitive children trying to blend in. The fear of drawing negative or unwanted attention to themselves makes them hate the idea of wearing glasses. That's why, at CustomEyes, we really care about the youth's perspective and work very hard to make frame selections for the child, rather than the parent. I often say that the parent has control of the budget, but to provide a pair of glasses that will be loved, the child has the privilege to select the look.
I have had young clients come in who are very reluctant to face the prospect of wearing glasses. While they are in a colorful outfit, expressing their own sense of style, a parent will often say something like, "I want a brown frame that matches everything." I like to diplomatically point out that brown (or any adult-catered frame) matches nothing, really, that the child would select in their daily look. I can testify that if a parent selects glasses by their own preference, rather than the child's, the glasses won't be loved...or long-lasting.

I-Green Customizable Eyewear Technology for Youth
At CustomEyes, we have the privilege of representing I-Green custom eyewear. These pieces are crafted from completely recycled material from Europe and then manufactured here in the USA. Kids come in, sit down, and actually design their own glasses! There are literally hundreds of colors and almost any shape one can imagine—from classic to whimsical. It's possible to sit in front of our computer and pick exactly what fits the child's idea of 'the best glasses they can imagine.' One of my favorite things about this process is when the young client first wears a pair they have designed. They can get amazing responses from their friends at the cool eyewear they 'made' for themselves. As something they created, these new glasses are truly loved and cared for by the child much more responsibly.
