Why You Should Wear Sunglasses in the Winter

Jan 01, 2023

You might be surprised to hear that yes, even in the winter, you should be wearing sunglasses. While perusing your closet for cold-weather accessories, you might not think of them but protective eyewear, even in the drizzly, dreary months is a must. Here are a few reasons to be wearing sunglasses this winter:

Reduce glare and eye strain

Sunglasses can alleviate a lot of straining caused by glare and reflective surfaces. This is typically a result of wet weather causing surfaces to become harsh and reflect light into your eyes.

Protection from UV light

All year long, the sun is throwing harsh ultraviolet (UV) light at our little blue planet. Exposure to UV light can cause ocular issues such as cataracts, corneal damage, and macular degeneration.

While icy weather is not very common here in Wilmington, we will not begrudge to mention to all of our dear readers, wherever they might be, that snow can intensify the effects of UV light, reflecting up to 80%. This will cause UV light to affect you nearly twice as much, increasing your risks for damage to the eye and your skin.

Speaking of snow... it can also cause photokeratitis, or sunburnt corneas, better known as snow blindness. Another great reason to don the Ray-Bans!

One of the fundamentals here at CustomEyes is that your eyewear and fashion needs are both cared for. We carry sunglasses from many different designers, in an array of styles, that can be made to meet your prescription needs. Get in touch with us today to find functional and fashionable eyewear.
